ART / CULTURE / EVENTS
Despite Lucerne’s size it has much in the way of culture to be proud of. Picasso, Erni, Toscanini, Wagner: resounding names that are as much a part of Lucerne as the latest movies, the oldest glacial discoveries, exciting sports events, relaxing theatre evenings, loud Carnival folklore, muted tones in the concert hall, lively museums and the dead lion. Convinced or confused? Not to worry, Lucerne’s Tourist Information calendar of events gives you a clear perspective so you won’t miss anything in Lucerne. Richard Wagner composed „Siegfried-Idyll“ for his wife Cosima at their country mansion Tribschen in Lucerne. It was performed there for the first time when the International Festival of Music (IMF) first began August 25, 1938 and conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Since then the Lucerne Festivals have been an attraction for music lovers from all over the world. Besides the well-known and respected city theatre (including ballet and opera) there is a whole spectrum of performing art talent to be found in Lucerne. Lucerne’s Mardi Gras belongs to Lucerne just like the Walter Tower. From Dirty Thursday trough Ash Wednesday the city becomes a crazy inferno. Impossible to describe, it must be seen and experienced!
